An informal meeting of thirteen firms representing the manufacturers of steam heating apparatus
was held on October 5, 1885. The group acted on an idea that would forever change the mechanical
contracting industry in the New York City area. They united themselves and established the Heating
Piping Contractors New York City Association, what is known today as one of the oldest trade associations
in the country. This was the first predecessor of what is today the Mechanical Contractors Association
of New York. The innovative idea of banding together would enable members to assist each other in
being cognizant of emerging technologies, addressing labor issues effectively and improving business
practices.
