2008 Scholarship Winners at the Awards Reception in May

The Program

The STEAMFITTING INDUSTRY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM is sponsored by the Steamfitting Industry Promotion Fund of New York and Long Island because it is believed that every effort to strengthen the status of "our family" within the Industry as well as within the community should be encouraged.

Six scholarships are awarded annually on a competitive basis. Each scholarship carries with it a stipend of $3,000 a year for a maximum of two years.

Winners of Steamfitting Industry Scholarships may attend any accredited four-year college or university in the United States and may select any course of study leading to a bachelor's degree. Both choices should be guided by the student's evaluation of his interests, needs
and abilities.

The scholarship award will be sent directly to the college at which the recipient is enrolled. The stipend will be credited to the recipient's account and used in accordance with the scholarship policy of the school.

How Winners Are Determined

As an applicant you should be informed that your test scores and rank-in-class are used to determine the top 20 candidates in the scholarship competition. These candidates are designated as semi-finalists and are requested to provide the scholarship selection committee with additional data.

Steamfitting Industry Scholarship winners are selected by an independent committee which will evaluate total high school records including academic work, test scores, extracurricular activities, creativity, written expression, leadership qualities and high school recommendations. This committee meets to review the credentials of all semifinalists. Each folder is reviewed by the committee. Each candidate is then ranked according to the committee's review. The first six candidates are identified as winners, the next six candidates are identified as alternates. If for some reason a candidate identified as a winner does not accept the award, the first alternate would then be offered the award. If necessary this procedure would take place down the line of alternates.

Winners will be announced by May 1, 2009. Each scholarship award will become effective when the winner is enrolled in the college to which he/she has been admitted.

In the event a winner elects to attend a tuition-free college or is a recipient of another scholarship, the Steamfitting Industry Scholarship Program reserves the right to change its award and select an alternate winner.

Scholarship winners must be present at the 2009 Scholarship Awards Reception in May (date to be announced). If a winner is unable to attend the scholarship reception, the Steamfitting Industry Promotion Fund reserves the right to change its award and select an alternate winner.

A scholarship winner who maintains satisfactory progress toward his/her degree--according to standards for scholarship renewal set by the college--will retain his/her scholarship throughout the two-year term. It is mandatory, however, that the student qualify each year by furnishing the Scholarship Committee with evidence of satisfactory academic progress.

If a recipients' studies are interrupted by illness, accident, or some other extenuating circumstance, the student may request that his/her Steamfitting Industry Scholarship be held
during that time. Any such interruption must be reported promptly to the Scholarship Committee for action.

Important
Before beginning to complete the application for a Steamfitting Industry Scholarship, read the information given on this webpage about qualifications and procedures for applying. By carrying out these instructions carefully, you will be considered for one of the scholarship awards.

Application for a Steamfitting Industry Scholarship does not constitute application for college admission. It is your responsibility to apply for and gain admission to the college of your choice. A scholarship award assures you of financial aid only after you have
been admitted to a college.

The receipt of this application will not be acknowledged. However, all applicants will be notified of the outcome of their participation in the competition.
